When Lara Hopewell was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2009 her husband Rob started a Facebook group named Lara's League as a way to keep family and friends up-to-date on Lara's progress and as a means for people to show Lara support throughout her treatment. Within a matter of weeks Lara's friends Kerry Smith and Pam Lind, who were already planning to walk in the 2010 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, asked if they could participate under the name Lara's League. As they say, the rest is history! Thirty-one highly motivated women walked in Lara's League's first Avon walk and raised over $80,000 in 4 months.
As of 2016, Lara's League has participated in four Avon Walks, Relay for Life and has raised over $250,000 for organizations including The Avon Foundation, The American Cancer Society and Stand Up To Cancer. We are incredibly excited about the opportunity to donate locally through our new partnership with the Inova Dwight and Martha Schar Cancer institute. We are also donating to the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's National Medical Center and Inova's Life with Cancer.
Lara's League annually hold fundraisers including The Backhand Breast Cancer Tennis Event, Pink Links Golf Tournament, Lara's League Mingle and Jingle Happy Hour and The October Saves Goalie Challenge.
